Audio converter questions
Is the audio converter free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no account, no sign-in and no limit on the number of files.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The converter is FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and runs inside your browser. Your audio is read and written in your browser's memory and never sent to a server. The only download is the converter engine itself (about 32 MB, once).
Which formats can I convert?
MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG and M4A in any direction — for example MP3 to WAV, WAV to MP3, FLAC to MP3, M4A to MP3, OGG to MP3 or MP3 to M4A. OGG files are written with the Vorbis codec (Opus-in-OGG files can be read but not written); M4A files contain AAC audio.
Does converting MP3 to WAV or FLAC improve the quality?
No. WAV and FLAC store audio without further loss, but they cannot restore detail that MP3, AAC or OGG compression already removed. The file gets bigger, not better. Convert to WAV or FLAC when a program needs that format.
What is the difference between M4A and AAC?
AAC is the audio codec; M4A is the MP4 container file that holds it. This converter writes AAC-LC audio inside an .m4a container, which plays in iTunes/Apple Music, iPhone, Android and most players.
How large can my file be?
Up to 200 MB per file, and up to about 700 MB of output. Everything happens in browser memory, so very long files saved as WAV may need a compressed format instead. On phones, shorter files work best.
Which bitrate should I pick for MP3?
320 kbps keeps the most quality and is a safe choice for DJ software. 192 kbps is a good balance for listening, 128 kbps for small files.
